Today, I’m stepping outside our usual wedding tips and tricks to share a deeply personal story—a glimpse into what goes on behind the booth and the heart that goes into this business. This past Saturday, I had the honor of DJing Drew and Faith’s beautiful wedding at Red Acre Barn in Prole, IA. But it was far from a typical wedding day for me.
Saturday started like any other, with a little rain in the air, and I was preparing myself for a day filled with celebration. But on my way to the wedding, I got a call from my wife with news that tore at my heart: our oldest dog, Thor, had suffered another seizure. He was disoriented, struggling, and we both knew it was time to make the hardest decision—one we had hoped we wouldn’t have to make yet. After talking through our options, my wife and I made the choice to let him go for his own peace. Thor had been my rock, my best friend, and had been by my side for years. I had only about 30 minutes to process the decision before I arrived at the venue, needing to set everything aside and focus on celebrating Drew and Faith’s happiest day.
As I pulled up to Red Acre Barn, I was greeted by a surprise—a beautiful dog belonging to Drew and Faith. Seeing this sweet pup, happy and full of life, lifted my spirits just a little. Drew and Faith were beaming, thrilled that I was there to celebrate with them. The amazing vendor team and the venue owner created a welcoming environment, which helped me shift my focus to the couple’s special day. And as the night went on, Drew and Faith’s dog kept coming back behind the DJ booth for pets and comfort. Without knowing it, this dog gave me exactly what I needed that night.
The wedding went as perfectly as planned. I was able to focus on Drew and Faith, watching their joy and helping them celebrate, while holding my own heartbreak quietly in the background. Toward the end of the night, I took a moment to thank them and shared a little of what I’d been going through. They were beyond supportive, and their kindness, though it touched me deeply, made my heart ache just a little more.
On the drive home, I found myself swinging between emotions—smiling as I thought of the beautiful wedding, and then breaking down at the thought of what was waiting the next morning. On Sunday, we put our sweet Thor to rest. His last day was filled with everything he loved—Burger King, ice cream cones, a game of fetch, and all of us around him. It was peaceful, surrounded by love, and he will always be missed.
This weekend reminded me of the power of professionalism and the strength it sometimes takes to be fully present for others when your heart is somewhere else. It would have been easy to cancel or to let my emotions show during Drew and Faith’s wedding, but that wouldn’t have been fair to them. They trusted me with one of the most important days of their lives, and as a professional, I knew I had to deliver the experience they had envisioned. Being a wedding vendor sometimes means carrying personal pain quietly so we can bring joy to others. And it’s a reminder that we often don’t know what someone else is going through.
Drew and Faith’s thoughtfulness and kindness touched me deeply, and I’ll always remember it. They reminded me how much a little compassion can mean. You never know the battles others are facing, so please, be kind, be thankful for the people around you, and show gratitude for those who make your day unforgettable.
If you’re planning a wedding, I hope you’ll consider the dedication, love, and professionalism that go into making it perfect. And if you’re looking for someone who will give you their all, I still have a few weekends open for 2025. Please reach out—I’d be honored to help make your day unforgettable.
