There’s something about backyard weddings that make them feel extra special. Maybe it’s the intimate setting, or the fact that you’re celebrating at a place full of personal memories. Today, Tyler and Kate Ward’s wedding was no exception. As I drove down the long gravel driveway to Kate’s parents’ house in Ottumwa, Iowa, I could already sense that the day was going to be unique. But if I’m being honest, I had my initial nerves.
First, I wasn’t sure how I’d manage to turn my trailer around on that long gravel road. Second, I didn’t know how close I could get to unload. And third, the biggest worry of any outdoor wedding—electricity. But let me tell you, Kate and Ty had thought of everything.
As I pulled up, I was immediately greeted by the beauty of it all. Bistro lights lined the path all the way from the driveway to the tent, and I was able to back up right to the entrance for a smooth setup. Let me tell you, that’s a big win for me! The decor was breathtaking—pampas grasses, ferns, and candles everywhere, which would create the perfect vibe later that night.
The ceremony itself was held by their pond, a bit of a trek from the tent, but they had a ranger to help transport my equipment. This is where The Sound Doctor DJ & Photo Booth really shines—no matter how remote, we can make it happen! With speakers, a microphone, and music, we ensured everyone could hear the ceremony, even though the nearest power source was more than 400 feet away.
It was the officiant’s first time performing a wedding, and you could tell he was a bit nervous. I was glad I could step in, share some tips, and calm his nerves—after all, that’s part of what we do. The ceremony was short, but sweet and deeply meaningful, as everyone then made their way back to the tent for cocktail hour.
Because of a slight delay, cocktail hour was brief, but it gave the guests just enough time to grab a drink and enjoy the atmosphere. After introductions, Kate’s grandmother, Candy, gave a beautiful blessing. There’s something so heartfelt about grandmas giving blessings—it always feels like they’re sharing a piece of their lifelong wisdom. I couldn’t help but think of my own grandma, and how much moments like these must mean to them.
Dinner was something out of the ordinary—no buffet or plated meals. Instead, Kate and Tyler brought in two food trailers: pizza and BBQ! I’ve got to say, everyone raved about the food, and I even managed to snag a slice of pizza (thanks to the bartenders who might’ve saved it just for me!). The combination of delicious food, cool vibes, and that outdoor setting really set the tone for the evening.
There’s just something magical about a first dance under the stars, surrounded by bistro lights. Kate and Tyler’s first dance was flawless, and the parent dances were equally moving. It’s hard to put into words, but watching them dance, you could feel the love radiating throughout the night.
For me, this wedding felt personal. I’ve known Tyler for years—he was the bat boy when I played baseball with his brothers in Little League and Babe Ruth. Seeing him grown up, standing beside Kate, and celebrating this monumental day was surreal. It’s moments like this that remind me why I love what I do.
The night didn’t slow down from there. The dance floor was packed, and the energy was infectious. From country hits to Nashville bar party vibes, Kate and Tyler had wanted their wedding to feel like a wild night in Music City—and that’s exactly what we delivered. Plus, there were plenty of keg stands happening. I didn’t participate, but I’ll say this: the guests were having a blast.
I’ve said it before, but I always appreciate when couples give me a “vibe” instead of a long playlist. Kate and Ty’s request for a Nashville-style party gave me the freedom to create a truly unique experience for them, and it paid off big time. A curated vibe beats a set playlist any day.
The heat and sweat didn’t take away from the magic of the day. From the beautiful ceremony by the pond to the pizza, BBQ, keg stands, and an absolutely rocking dance floor, this wedding had it all. I’m so grateful to have been part of Tyler and Kate’s special day, and I’ll carry the memories with me for a long time.
